Strengthening Career and Professional Development One Step at a Time

Recently, my team and I had the incredible opportunity to meet in person for our Career and Professional Development Summit. After years of primarily virtual collaboration, gathering face-to-face reminds us just how impactful it is to connect beyond the screen. The summit was more than just a series of meetings; it was a powerful, energizing experience that pushed us to think differently about how we serve students and how we align more intentionally with WGU’s mission.

Throughout our time together, we explored strategies to expand our reach, increase alignment across departments, and enhance the student experience in meaningful ways. WGU’s mission centers on creating pathways to opportunity and personal advancement through accessible, competency-based education. As a team, we reflected deeply on what that mission means within the context of career and professional development. We discussed how we could build systems and spaces that not only support job readiness but also empower our students to feel confident and capable in their long-term career journeys.

As I left the summit, I carried with me a renewed sense of direction and three key reflections that continue to shape how we support WGU students. First, we recognize now more than ever that career planning isn’t a linear or one-size-fits-all experience. Every WGU student comes to us with a unique background, different life experiences, ambitions, responsibilities, and timelines. Our responsibility as career professionals is not just to offer guidance, but to ensure that guidance fits within the context of each student’s life. We are focused on meeting students where they are, whether that means offering tools that adapt to different learning styles, providing on-demand resources for busy schedules, such as weekend availability and early morning, and extending days, with the continuation of offering one-on-one coaching that honors everyone’s story. Career planning at WGU is evolving to be more flexible, more personalized, and more deeply connected to the realities our students face because we believe career support should be as adaptable as the learners we serve.

Second, resume development remains a cornerstone of career readiness, but we’re transforming how we approach it. A resume is no longer just a list of experiences; it’s a strategic tool to communicate value, skills, and goals. At the summit, we explored new and innovative ways to help students build stronger, more tailored resumes that reflect not only what they’ve done, but who they are and where they want to go. This includes enhancements like AI-driven feedback tools like Jobscan, industry-specific templates, and interactive learning opportunities that let students actively shape and revise their materials. Our goal is for every WGU student to graduate not only with a polished resume but with the confidence to use it effectively.

Third, we left with a deeper commitment to strengthening career confidence through connection. We understand that career development, especially in an online environment, can often feel overwhelming or uncertain. That’s why we’re continuing to focus on building trust through clear, consistent communication and meaningful one-on-one support. Whether it’s a personalized coaching session, a quick check-in, or an easy-to-navigate resource, our goal is to make every student feel seen, heard, and supported. We’re also examining how our tools and messaging can better instill confidence at every stage of the student journey, from the first career exploration to job application. Because we believe that career confidence isn’t just about having the right answers, it’s about knowing someone is in your corner as you take the next step.
